MUSSOORIE,  22 Jan 2019

Mussoorie woke up to a crisp white sheet of snow this morning. It continued snowing through the day on Tuesday making it easily one of the best snowfalls in the past six years or so.

Interestingly unlike the last light drizzle of snow, this time, the entire town right from Landour to the far end of Happy valley got a generous snowfall. The snow ranged anywhere from three inches on the Mall Road area to a healthy seven in Landour area.

Trees laden with snow, tin roofs covered with powdery snow, children making snowmen, snowball fights in localities, the town got its postcards winter days back and how!

Beena Nautiyal, a local told eNewsDesk, “I have not seen snow like this in years together. It seems straight out of a fairly tale book.”

Old timers recall good old days of the snow when it would snow as early as November and Christmas was more often than not white. January then, usually meant a second or third snowfall of the season.

Back till even 80s and mid 90s the snow would sometime be as high as two-three feet.

Tuesday’s snowfall then not just brought back old memories but also a chance to create many more for the ones who have not witnessed this magic from nature. The much awaited snowfall having come close to the republic day weekend has also raised hopes of revival of winter tourists. In fact by Tuesday evening there was a beeline of vehicles of all shapes and sizes making their way up to the hill town.

Met Department had warned of heavy to very heavy snowfall in several areas of Uttarakhand.

A good snowfall is extremely crucial to the hills not just for the winter vegetation but also to make sure the water resources are replenished for the summers ahead.
