Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat’s recent statement in which he said that during time of state agitation, he too was in favour of inclusion of Saharanpur in Uttarakhand has come as a shocker in the state particularly when demand for granting permanent capital status for Gairsain is gaining ground in the state.

Saharanpur district part of Uttar Pradesh shares border with Uttarakhand and has been hub of economic activities for long. This plain district comprises people mostly from the UP origin.  But the statement has created a furore as people in Uttarakhand allege that it could a ploy to outnumber hill people with the people from plains and thus could change political equations in the state.

Congress in Uttarakhand has already clinched the issue accusing the state BJP government of betraying the very cause of formation of Uttarakhand. Congress has expressed dismay that how can chief minister give such an irresponsible statement.

BJP too has come on a backfoot over the issue.  The party is now trying to retract the statement and has accused media and political parties of distorting chief minister’s statement.  The issue interestingly comes at a time when demand for making Gairsain a permanent capital has already gained momentum. The shadow boxing between BJP and Congress is expected to continue even in the days to come.
