DEHRADUN, Feb 2
A breeding centre for Uttarakhand state bird Monal will be opened up at high altitude Naintial Zoo in Nainital district of Uttarakhand.
The plan for coming up with breeding centre in Uttarakhand is pending for a long time and will help the state bird get greater protection and hopefully help increase its number. It will not only cater to the breeding aspect of pheasant, particularly state bird Monal, but will also assist in the study of this endangered species.
Monal’s natural habitat lies in the snow-bound areas of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, Nandadevi National Park, Gangotri National Park and other high reaches of the state with Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. Its other habitats in Uttarakhand like Govind Pashu Vihar and Uttarakashi Forest Division.
There has been no comprehensive census of state bird Monal so far in Uttarakhand.
