DEHRADUN, July 21:
A private bus carrying pilgrims from Maharashtra fell into a deep gorge near Karnaprayag in District Chamoli. At least two persons, both women were reported to have died in the accident while 32 others are reported to be injured. Some of those seriously injured were brought in a chopper to Dehradun for treatment. Others have been admitted to Community Hospital in Karnaprayag.
As per the Chamoli district administration, the bus, bearing registration number UK-11 PA 0040 was carrying pilgrims from Maharashtra and was returning from Badrinath where these pilgrims had a darshan of Lord Badrinath. The bus was carrying 35 passengers.
According to the reports, the bus driver lost control and fell into a deep gorge near FL 2 bend. The accident occurred on Friday evening only. The Police and the District Administration teams along a team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) reached the spot and launched a rescue operation within hours of the reports of the accident reaching them. The district administration informed that the pilgrims were from district Aurangabad in Maharashtra.
Meanwhile Governor K.K. Paul, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat have expressed deep sorrow and grief over the death of two pilgrims and injury to the others. Rawat in fact directed the air ambulance to be despatched immediately to the spot on hearing about the accident.
Eye witnesses claim that accident could have resulted in many more casualties since the spot where the bus fell is a residential colony and there was a possibility of the bus falling still deeper or over houses located below the road.
